Fresh Fruit 4 Kids

A problem that many people face from a young age and into their adult years, is addiction to junk food. Most people wouldn’t go so far as to say “addiction,” however, there is a severe issue with self control. A grocery store in Ohio is trying to create an alternative snacking option for children. This grocery store provided kids, under the age of 12, with fruit to eat. Parents get to shop while their children enjoy a free, healthy snack. Not only is this a healthier alternative to most snacks, it also helps to distract children from unhealthy food items they will see while shopping.

An article on the website Mental Floss said that one in three American children are overweight or obese. It’s easy to see why, when most unhealthy snack and food items are marketed towards kids. If you spend any amount of time watching a kids program on TV, you’ll see how excessive junk food consumption is so frequently directed at young children. Helping kids recognize the importance of eating healthy at a young age, will have positive lasting health effects.

When the Ohio supermarket introduced the first Fresh Fruit 4 Kids stand, they received a lot praise from the community. Over the past 30 years, childhood obesity rates have tripled. This is largely to do with the bombardment of junk food in advertisements, and in stores. By making a small change they were able to make a difference and inspire others to do so. As word spreads, and more people strive to make changes, they will be able to benefit their communities.
